Warehouse Management System (WHAM) is a key part of the Material Management and primarily aims to control receipt, storage and issue of materials within a warehouse and process the associated transactions, including receiving, issuing, returning and transferring.

The system also direct and optimize stock based on real-time information about the status of bin utilization. 

Difference between Bin Card & Store Ledger

  • User

    Bin Card is maintained by the Storekeeper. Store Ledger is prepared by Cost Accounting Department.

  • Nature

    Bin Card is a record of quantity only. Store Ledger is a record of quantities and values.

  • Period

    In Bin Card, entries are made immediately after each transaction. In Store Ledger, entries are made periodically.

  • Posting

    Postings are made before a transaction in Bin Card. Posting are made after a transaction in Store Ledger.

  • Using Department

    Bin Card is kept inside the store. Store Ledger is kept outside the store.

User

Advantages & Disadvantages of Bin Card

Advantages

  • There would be less chances of mistakes being made as entries will be made at the same time as goods are received or issued by the person actually handling the materials.
  • Control over stock can be more effective, in as much as comparison of the actual quantity in hand at any time with the book balance is possible.
  • Identification of the different items of materials is facilitated by reference to the Bin Card the bin or storage receptacle. :

Disadvantages

  • Store records are dispersed over a wide area.
  • The cards are liable to be smeared with dirt and grease because of proximity to material and also because of handling materials.
  • People handling materials are not ordinarily suitable for the clerical work involved in writing Bin Cards.
